Yes. When you make a purchase using your debit card, the merchant may place a hold on your account for an estimated purchase amount. At gas stations in particular, these hold amounts can range up to $75 and higher, even if you only put $10 of gas in your car. Merchant hold periods can range up to a few days, even after the transaction clears your account. UMassFive does not have control over these holds. Remember that when funds are on hold, they are not reflected in your available balance. Attempting to then use your debit card for more than your available balance may result in insufficient funds or courtesy pay fees. Always read the hold policies at gas pumps and other merchants carefully.
