UMassFive Teams up with UMass Athletes to Build Beds for Children

On Wednesday, June 12, student-athletes from the University of Massachusetts football team arrived at the Mullins Center in Amherst to volunteer their time and craftsmanship to building beds for children in need.

The idea for this build event grew naturally from UMassFive’s ongoing partnership with the University of Massachusetts Athletics Department, as well as our consistently enthusiastic participation in the A Bed For Every Child fundraising initiative.

Launched in 2012, A Bed for Every Child provides beds for children living in poverty. For every $250 raised, a child receives a twin bed frame, mattress, pillow, and linens. Since its inception, the program has delivered more than 7,000 beds. With over 200 requests statewide per month, UMassFive knew we could use a few helping hands to build the beds that donations funded.

We would like to extend a huge thank you to the members of the football team who worked together to build 35 twin beds during the event, as well as to Spectra Venue Management—who generously donated use of the Mullins Center so we could have a large enough space for the assembly process.
