The Pioneer Valley New Horizons Band is directed by Nancy Janoson and was launched in 2017 at the Northampton Community Music Center as an opportunity for seniors to learn or advance on a musical instrument in a welcoming, social setting with their peers. The program format was designed in 1991 by Roy Ernst at Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY, and then duplicated by more than 200 organizations around North America, leading to the founding of the New Horizons International organization. Participants receive group instruction from a section leader and attend weekly rehearsals as a full band. The group provides community concerts throughout the year at various locations and special events around the region. Thank you to Nancy, and New Horizons Band for letting us record their performance.

About Jason Trotta and the Northampton Community Music Center

Jason is the Executive Director of Northampton Community Music Center, a role that he has held for over twenty years. Since 2017, Jason has also served as Chair of the Northeast Chapter of the National Guild for Community Arts Education. In his spare time, he continues to work as a freelance composer and musician.

The Northampton Community Music Center (NCMC) was founded in 1986 with a mission to foster the love and pursuit of music in our community through quality education, performances, and activities that are accessible to all. NCMC employs more than 50 professional music teachers for its annual enrollment of nearly 1,000 students and reaches hundreds more through its outreach programming, workshops, and special events.

NCMC’s scholarship program provides financial aid to more than 150 socio-economically disadvantaged students each year and has never denied aid to a qualifying applicant. UMassFive is a proud supporter of the important work that the NCMC performs in our local community.
